My husband is lucky for a multitude of reasons. To start, he has a wife in the travel industry who often gifts him trips to celebrate big milestones. He also has a wife who is open/willing to find out what kind of fishing is available on said trips, sometimes even planning the trips around it.
Our trip to Tiamo was somewhere between a birthday gift for Trey and a celebratory first-anniversary trip. I stumbled upon this Virtuoso and Relais & Chateaux property while doing research for clients, and knew immediately that it couldn’t be a better fit for this trip.
Tiamo is a small boutique property made of only about 15 stand-alone villas on Andros Island in the Bahamas. This is the largest island in the Bahamas but once of the least populated and developed.
After landing in Nassau, we took a small, 20-minute prop plane and a short ferry to the property. The crystal blue waters and white sand are as picturesque as anywhere in the Bahamas, but the personality of the of the property really starts to shine once you are on the island for a few hours.
It is situated in the middle of protected land and water, meaning that there is not a lot around the hotel, even though you are not far from civilization, The 15 villas on property (some with plunge pools) are private, romantic and have a level of rustic luxury. When I say rustic, I mean barefoot. Sure, you have to walk out of your bedroom through a screened porch to use the restroom, but I would say it’s worth it to be in the middle of the Bahamas with the stunning clear water steps from your door.
Now, one of the biggest draws to this unique hotel is it’s proximity to one of the most challenging and coveted types of sport fishing in the world- i.e. what brought Trey and I there. My husband is an avid fly-fisher and we spent most of our days bone-fishing in the flats, catching upwards of 25 fish. There is no doubt that the special water and ecosystem in this area is it’s primary draw. Despite the small size of the hotel, and having only one restaurant (though some of the most delicious food with a menu that changes daily and such fresh local ingredients), the personality of the hotel is overwhelming and the beauty of the Bahamas is truly unbeatable.
The Bahamas in general has something for everyone, but Tiamo is not a place for every one of my clients. It is a special clientele who values closeness to nature and peaceful isolation, but if it is a place for you, it will leave you speechless.
